Program notes:

The “Here’s Wishing You Well” interview with Maj. Glenn Miller was pre-recorded and inserted into the balance of the program that was recorded at BBC on September 15, 1944.

M1C Sam Donahue and the U. S. Navy Band of the Allied Liberation forces appeared as guests with Maj. Glenn Miller and the American Band of the AEF on their September 21, 1944 ABAEF broadcast. The recording of this program does not survive. The tunes the Navy group performed in the broadcast were “Somebody Loves Me” and “LST Party.” To recognize the historic appearance of the Navy and AAF bands together, the Navy Band V-Disc recording of “LST Party” is included in the program.

The United States Office of War Information operated the Voice of America, the international radio broadcasting service of the United States of America. The wartime VOA European Service was identified as the American Broadcasting Station in Europe (ABSIE), based in London. The AAF Band recorded broadcasts for ABSIE at Abbey Road because the ABSIE studios in London were too small to accommodate the large orchestra. The pseudonym “Ilse” is used by Gloria Wagner to announce the “Music for the Wehrmacht” programs.

Thank you to the BBC Written Archives, Caversham Park, EMI, Kew Gardens and the National Archives of the United States, College Park. MD for their support. For further information about the VOA and ABSIE, please see the books “Glenn Miller Declassified” (University of Nebraska Press, 2017) and “America Ascendant” (University of Nebraska Press, 2019).
