Applewood Healthy Home Tip #1: Change Filters Every Other Month

Summer is here and I want to remind everyone about the importance of changing air filters in your cooling system. Dirty filters are the number one cause of inefficient air flow which can raise your utility bills and prevent cool air from getting to your home. I recommend you change your filter as least every other month.

Have a question about your cooling system? Call Applewood at 303-328-3013.

Applewood Healthy Home Tip #2: Whole House Humidifiers

When it’s summertime in Colorado, the air can be painfully dry. It is a great time to consider a whole-house humidifier that can keep you comfortable and healthy in every season. Humidifiers can improve air quality and reduce irritation from allergies, dry skin and illness.

Applewood Healthy Home Tip #3: Sump Pumps – Your Best Defense Against Flooding

As we all know, summer rains in Colorado come on suddenly and can hit hard. Your sump pump is your best defense against flooding your home. We recommend you check it regularly to make sure it is operating properly. The good news is Applewood's state licensed plumbers are sump pump experts.

Have questions about your sump pump or need new one? Call Applewood at 303-328-3013.

Applewood Healthy Home Tip #4: Change Your Smoke Alarm Batteries

I want to remind everyone to change the batteries in their smoke alarms. Smoke alarms can provide early warning of a fire, giving the people in your home additional time to escape. In 2009-2013, smoke alarms sounded in more than half of the home fires reported to U.S. Fire Departments. The best policy is to change batteries twice a year when you set your clocks for Daylight Savings.

Applewood technicians always inspect customers’ homes for safety during a visit – including changing smoke alarm batteries. Call Applewood at 303-328-3013.

Applewood Healthy Home Tip #5: Flushable Wipes are NOT Flushable!

I want to remind everyone that flushable wipes are really bad for your home’s plumbing! Even if the packaging states those wipes are biodegradable or “flushable” – DON’T DO IT! So called “flushable” wipes can mean major clogs and sometimes expensive repairs.

The good news is Applewood’s licensed plumbers can handle even the worst clogs any day, any time. Call Applewood at 303-328-3013.

Applewood Healthy Home Tip #6: Wasteful Leaks Equals Money Down the Drain

Did you know a drippy faucet could be wasting 5 to 10 gallons of water per day? Or, that a leaky toilet could cost you as much as $840 per year? Simply put, leaks are truly money down the drain and you want to fix them as soon as possible.

Applewood’s state licensed and background checked plumbers can fix a leak fast. Call Applewood at 303-328-3013.

Applewood Healthy Home Tip #7: Water Heaters Need Maintenance Too!

Most people don’t think about their water heater until it’s not working. The fact is, water heaters need attention. Over time, sediment settles at the bottom of your heater’s tank, insulating water from being heated efficiently, forcing your water heater to run longer to heat the water, making it work much harder than it should have to and consequently using more energy.

Applewood recommends flushing your water heater and having it inspected yearly. Call Applewood at 303-328-3013.

Applewood Healthy Home Tip #8: GFCI Outlets Can Protect You in Your Home

Did you know 70% of the electrocutions that occur each year in the home could be prevented by installing Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters – also known as GFCI outlets? GFCIs are meant to protect people from electrical shock. I recommend them any place in the home where water flows, like bathrooms and kitchens.

Applewood’s state licensed electricians are experts at keeping homes safe. Want to know more? Call Applewood at 303-328-3013.

Applewood Healthy Home Tip #9: Detecting and Preventing Gas Leaks

Keeping your home safe and healthy means making sure there are no gas leaks. The best way to detect a gas leak is to use your senses! If you hear whistling or hissing, smell an odor like rotten eggs or see bubbling in wet areas, these could all be signs of a gas leak.

Applewood’s licensed plumbers can accurately detect gas leaks, install emergency shut-off valves and do any necessary repairs. Call Applewood at 303-328-3013.

Applewood Healthy Home Tip #10: Disposal DO’s and DON’Ts

Let’s talk about keeping garbage disposals running. There are definitely foods you should avoid putting in disposals – especially starchy or fibrous ones such as celery, onion skins, rice, pasta and potatoes. Also – it is a good practice to let cold water run for a few seconds after using your disposal to get rid of any extra food particles.

Should you run into a jam or clog, Applewood’s licensed plumbers can help. Call us at 303-328-3013.

Applewood Healthy Home Tip #11: Keep Your AC Running By Keeping it Clean

As the extreme Colorado winds kick up, the dust comes with it and blankets your outdoor air conditioning components, preventing them from working properly and increasing energy bills. Keeping the unit clean and clear of obstructions like grass clippings, cobwebs and sticks is crucial. Dirt can accumulate inside the unit as well.

Considering having a certified technician professionally clean and inspect your system every year. Call Applewood at 303-328-3013.

Applewood Healthy Home Tip #12: Programmable Thermostats Save You Money!

As we all know, heating and cooling your home can be expensive. Without a programmable thermostat, you are possibly wasting energy when you’re not home! According to Energy Star, the average home spends more than $2000 a year on energy costs, up to half of which is for heating and cooling. With a programmable thermostat, you can save around $180 each year, maybe more!

Our technicians are thermostat experts. Call Applewood today at 303-328-3013.

Applewood Healthy Home Tip #13: When do you Need a New Water Heater?

People are always asking how they will know it is time for a new Water Heater. I’d say some sure signs are when water doesn’t get hot enough, running out of hot water fast, noises coming from your water heater or – of course – if your water heater leaks from the top or bottom. Even a small leak can sometimes mean major damage!

If you have questions about your water heater, call Applewood today at 303-328-3013.

Applewood Healthy Home Tip #14: Carbon Monoxide – A Silent Killer

I want to warn you about carbon monoxide poisoning. You can’t see it, hear it, or smell it but it’s there and it is dangerous.  This silent killer takes the lives of nearly 500 people every year when it could be avoided. Purchase a carbon monoxide detector with an alarm and make sure to have major appliances like furnaces, boilers and water heaters inspected yearly by a professional.

Applewood experts can help! Call today, 303-328-3013.
